LASIK surgery is designed to improve eyesight for those who are tired of dealing with glasses and contact lenses. At a relatively reasonable cost, most people experience significant enough improvement in their vision that they are able to toss the glasses and contacts forever. LASIK is an excellent alternative for those who would like to permanently improve their vision.
LASIK, otherwise known as laser eye surgery, involves a laser being used to reshape the cornea, which improves vision. A whole host of vision problems including myopia, astigmatism and age related vision changes can be corrected with a very simple and short procedure.
Good candidates for LASIK surgery are those in good health, who are not pregnant or breastfeeding and who are nearsighted, farsighted or have low to mid level astigmatism. LASIK is not designed to correct every vision problem and a thorough consult should be done prior to determining if LASIK is the right treatment.
LASIK is performed on an outpatient basis with no need for overnight stays in the hospital. Numbing drops are placed in the eye to be worked on. The surgeon will mark the patients eye, then the patient will be asked to look at a light through a microscope while the laser reshapes the eye. There is generally little to no discomfort during this process. The procedure will only last a few minutes and most will notice an immediate improvement in vision. Others will notice an increase in their vision improvement over days to weeks as their eyes adjust to their new shape.
Many people will experience a complete improvement to 20/20 vision following surgery. While others may not have as significant an improvement, most at least report an improvement to 20/40 vision following LASIK surgery. If someone is a good candidate for LASIK surgery, it is an excellent way to eliminate the need for contacts and eyeglasses forever.
